The war in Ukraine

The war in Ukraine is a conflict that started in 2014 when Russia annexed Crimea and supported separatist rebels in eastern Ukraine. The war has killed more than 14,000 people and displaced millions more. Despite several ceasefire agreements, the fighting has continued and escalated in recent months.

According to the latest news reports, Ukraine has launched a counter-offensive against Russia’s forces in the southern Zaporizhzhia region, where it has breached some of Russia’s defensive lines for the first time12. Ukraine has also claimed to have destroyed nine Russian helicopters and other military equipment in missile strikes on two Russian airfields34. Russia has denied these claims and accused Ukraine of violating the ceasefire. Russia has also continued to attack Ukraine’s ports on the River Danube with drones, disrupting its grain exports1.

The war in Ukraine has drawn international attention and concern, as it poses a threat to the stability and security of Europe and the world. The US and its allies have expressed their support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and have imposed sanctions on Russia for its aggression. However, they have also urged both sides to de-escalate the situation and resume dialogue. The UN has called for an immediate end to the hostilities and a peaceful resolution of the conflict.
